Monica Hulsing is a self taught catholic artist and was born on the 27th of April 1966 inDelft, Holland. She is the cousin of pater Jan Bouman who lives and works as a priest on Aruba.
All her works are painted with acrylic paint on water colour paper size 21 x 29.7 cm (A4 format).
The loss of her brother at an early age has woven a dark thread through her life and greatly influenced her work. Thus death as well as life form the focal points of her work, in which she strives above all to emphasise life through the use of vivid colours against a black background representing mortality. It makes her see God in a temporary existence
She got the idea of expressing herself in this way after she had herself come face to face with death. After an insect bite she developed Lyme's Disease, which left her with physical limitations, forcing her to stop work on large murals and wood panel paintings and create her art on a much smaller scale.
Having to reduce the size of her work gave her the unique idea of painting on the same scale which people encounter in their daily lives all over the world. After all, millions of sheets of A4 paper roll out of printers, faxes and photocopiers everyday at work or at home. The works are dedicated to Jezus Christ who gave her back her life and health to raise her children again.
Her work has been exhibited in Amstelpark in Amsterdam and discussed in the newspaper. She recently took part in the preliminary rounds of "Het Vierkante Ei 2007" (The Square Egg) in The Netherlands
